About the course
This qualification helps the learners to develop the knowledge and practical skills required in professionally carry out installation and maintenance on air source heat pump units. This course is designed specifically for experienced Plumbing and Heating engineers with heating and water industry experience.
At completion, learners will be able to demonstrate they are competent in accordance with legislation, regulations, and industry standards relating to the installation, testing and commissioning of heat pump systems. This qualification forms part of the requirement of MCS registration (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) as an approved installer.
Heat Training Grant Voucher
The Heat Training Grant supports trainees in England taking short training courses relevant to heat pumps and heat networks. Trainees can receive grants of up to £500 towards eligible courses

Course Content
This qualification will cover the following study units.
- Health and Safety associated with air source heat pump system
- The principle of the vapour compression system and system components
- Different types of heat pump system and operational arrangement
- Principles of heat pump efficiency and design
- Principles of domestic hot water cylinder selection and system design
- Principles of hydraulic system design for heat pump
- Heat pump system installation and commission
- Heat pump system installation handover requirements
- Heat pump system service, maintenance and faults diagnosis
Learners must successfully complete an online multiple-choice exam plus practical assignment.
Entry Requirements
Learner will be invited to attend a Skill Scan. Two years minimum of verifiable experience on the installation of heating and hot water systems will be required.
Learner must hold one of the following:
- A valid ACS (CCN1+CENWAT) certificate – must be involved in the installation of heating systems
- A Level 2 or Level 3 NVQ or SVQ in plumbing / heating & ventilation / gas / oil – Installation and Maintenance qualification
- An OFTEC Oil certificate
- A valid HETAS certificate (must be for wet systems)
- CPS registration for plumbing systems.
Plus, learner must hold all of the following:
- Water Regulations (LCL Awards or equivalent)
- Hot Water Systems G3 (LCL Awards or equivalent)
- Low Temperature Heating and Hot Water Systems in Dwellings (LCL Awards or equivalent)
Duration:
3 days including refresher training and exams. A copy of text book is included.
